The Mentoring Manager will establish and lead a Mentoring Programme as part of a consortium on a successfully awarded Strength in Places project, Growing Kent and Medway (GKM). GKM is a newly launched world-class research, innovation and enterprise cluster that supports growth in technology-driven horticultural production, food & drink processing, and manufacturing.

You will be responsible for sourcing a pool of volunteer mentors to support businesses working in target sectors, closely aligning to a Food Accelerator being run by the University of Greenwich. The Mentor Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day leadership of the mentoring team and the overall delivery of the mentoring programme, according to agreed timelines and outcomes.

You will be working closely with businesses and a range of external organisations to deliver the mentoring programme and with the intention of raising the profile of the University, the GKM project and generating income. A core element of the role will be to design, develop and deliver a collaborative research programme working alongside Growing Kent and Medway ‘Industry Fellow’ colleagues in Biosciences.  This includes designing, testing, and implementing new methods to initiate and build collaborations with regional companies. The overall aim is to maximise productivity in horticulture sectors, and the programme is intended to develop new paradigms for such academic-industry collaborations.

The GKM programme is funded by an £18 million UK Research and Innovation Strength in Places Fund grant to a world-class consortium of research partners that includes the University of Kent, NIAB EMR and the Natural Resources Institute/University of Greenwich. Other partners include a range of Agri-food companies (APS Produce, Berry Gardens Growers, Chapel Down, Gusbourne Estate, Richard Hochfeld Group, Thanet Earth and Worldwide Fruit); an innovative technology integration business (Geku Automation); and packaging company (Smurfit Kappa). GKM is backed by strong civic and business support with partners from the Kent & Medway Economic Partnership and Locate in Kent.

GKM will drive innovation and wealth creation by stimulating a vibrant and collaborative network that enables new and existing enterprises to develop and thrive. It connects industry with technologists and researchers to address the challenges faced by the sector and its supply chains’

As Mentor Manager, you will;

  • Be responsible for the day-to-day leadership of the mentoring team, training of mentors, and the overall delivery of the mentoring programme, according to agreed timelines and outcomes.
  • Work closely with businesses and a range of external organisations to deliver the mentoring programme and with the intention of raising the profile of the University, the GKM project, its partners, and generating income.
  • Develop a process for recruitment and selection of suitable mentors and mentees to join the Mentoring Programme, working closely with the Food Accelerator Manager at the University of Greenwich to identify and recruit mentees.
  • Establish and maintain a database of mentors and referral organisations who can support delivery of the programme.

To be successful in this role you will have/be:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience
  • Recognised Project Management qualification (eg PRINCE 2, APM) OR substantial project management experience in a similar role
  • Substantial experience of key project delivery activities such as risk management, stakeholder management, planning, budget management, change management, etc
  • Good broad knowledge and experience of successfully applying programme and project management tools and methodologies, and an ability to deploy and customise procedures for individual projects
